The Norwegian Government will stage an international high-level conference on climate change 27-28 May 2009, in Bergen, Norway. A central issue will be the capture and storage of CO2. The aim is to present substantial contributions to the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in December this year.

Norway has joined the newly founded International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The purpose of IRENA is to promote the use of renewable energy on a global scale, particularly in developing countries.

Norway has committed NOK 80 million (approx. 11,5 MUSD) towards a new fund for investments in projects to combat climate change and promote clean energy in developing countries. The Global Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Fund (GEEREF) is a public-private partnership initiated by the European Commission. Norway and Germany are the first two public donors to the fund.
