Timor Leste’s first Hydroelectric Power Plant opened
Gariuai, Timor Leste’s first hydroelectric power plant, financed by Norway, was opened 10th November 2008 by President of the Parliament, Mr Lasama and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr de Costa, Minister of Infrastructure, Mr Ley and Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor Leste, Mr Homme.
The hydroelectric power plant is a gift from Norway, and construction has taken place under the auspices of the Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate, who has assisted Timor Leste in energy and water resource management since 2003.
A total of about 1.200 local workers participated in the construction of the power plant. The Norwegian Water Resources and Energy Directorate did put great emphasize on transferring knowledge and expertise to the local community. The power plant provides electricity to the city of Baucau, which used to be dependent on diesel generators.
