Jakarta’s Nora goes from Tommy, and has her own facebook!

Last updated: 08/12/2011 // The embassy was truly excited when one of Ibsen's classic dramas was adapted to a contemporary Indonesian context, and became slightly astonished when Torvald Helmer came forward as Tommy Herlambang. That astonishment was quickly turned into ovations.

Rumah Boneka (A Doll's House) was set up at the impressive old Gedung Kesenian Theater in Jakarta. Premiere performance was sold out several  days in advance, and got full page coverage in the Jakarta Globe, one of the largest English-language newspapers. The main character, Nora, was divided between the actors Chantal Della Concetta and Maya Hasa, which altered every other day of the five productions. Chantal and Maya are daily, respectively, a news anchor and a professional harpist.

The play was translated into Indonesian, and adapted to a contemporary Indonesian context of Faiza Mardzoeki, head of the Institut Ungu. The Institute works to promote women's rights and gender equality through cultural projects. The project is part of the Embassy's strategic commitment to support the promotion of women's rights and gender equality through cultural expression and debate.
The play illustrated the timeless and universal in Ibsen's plays. Human dignity, corruption and gender equality were also core elements in Jakarta. "La couleur locale" came through locally appropriate names, and also with reference to social media .. "I do not recognize you Linda, you do not look like your picture on facebook."
