Research and development collaboration between Banda Aceh and Hedmark University College

Last updated: 26.03.2012 // Hedmark University College (HH) in Norway has been cooperating with the Nursing Academy Ibnu Sina (NAIS) and the Psychiatric Hospital Rumah Sakit Jiwa (RSJ), both in Aceh, since 2006.

Rumah Sakit Jiwa is the only psychiatric hospital in Aceh, with a capacity of 320 patients. Professor Arild Granerud at Hedmark University College tells the Newsletter that there are currently approximately  670 patients with up to 100 patients in the same room. The breach in capacity makes the situation very challenging both for the patients and the staff.
The main areas of cooperation between the institutions have been capacity and competence building through exchange programs for students and teachers. Students from Hedmark University College have been able to gain work experience from  hospitals in Aceh, especially the mental hospital. And five teachers and nurses from Aceh have been studying at Hedmark University College.

Granerud tells that the first master thesis on mental health conducted by one of the exchange students was terminated in august 2011 and that this very master thesis was the outset for research collaboration between the psychiatric hospital Rumah Sakit Jiwa and Hedmark University College. Granerud was in Banda Aceh for 3 weeks in February 2011 to start the collaboration. The aim of this project is to develop therapeutic environment knowledge and practice at Rumah Sakit Jiwa, and to develop research method knowledge at Ibnu Sina Nursing Academy.
