Last updated: 19/10/2011 // The Royal Norwegian Embassy hosted jointly a seminar with Ministry of Marin Affairs and Fisheries (MMAF) and the Norwegian Centre for Development Cooperation in Fisheries, 4th October 2011 in Jakarta on “Aquaculture – A cooperation between Indonesia and Norway”.

The seminar was opened by the Minister of Marine Affaires and Fisheries, Mr. Fadel Muhammad and the Ambassador of Norway, Mr. Eivind Homme. Keynote speeches were given by Dr. Ketut Sugama, Director General for Aquaculture, MMAF, and Ms Gunn Ovesen, CEO of Innovation Norway.

A number of Norwegian fish farming companies and research institutions were visiting Indonesia to discuss new technology and know-how within aquaculture development with Indonesia partners. Indonesia is today the second biggest producer of seafood and Norway the second biggest exporter.

Minister Fadel Muhammad said the government‘s effort is to double the fishery production, which includes fish, shrimp and seaweed by 2015 and hoped for increased partnership with Norway.

The seminar was the first event of its kind. It is a spinoff of the fruitful development cooperation between Indonesia and Norway on aquaculture and fishery management which started in 2009. An active exchange of experts from both countries is ongoing. “This seminar demonstrated a great potential for business opportunities within the marine sector for the two countries, building on the successful bilateral development and research cooperation. Norway is most willing to share our development, experience and knowhow with Indonesia as our close international partner”, said Ambassador Homme.
