The Future Energy Partnerships between Norwegian and Indonesian businesses

15/11/2010 // The business ties between Norway and Indonesia are very much concerned with energy. Norway has valuable knowledge – Indonesia has valuable resources. A regional energy conference hosted by Innovation Norway, the Norwegian Embassy and the Indonesia Norway Business Council (INBC) was successfully held in Jakarta the 8th November 2010. The one-day seminar treated both oil & gas and clean energy, and many potential stakeholders in these sectors participated.

Chairman for Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), Mr. Gita Wirjawan, and the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Jonas Gahr Støre, were both addressing the future business relations between Norwegian and Indonesian cooperation in the energy sector in their key notes. Minister Støre advocated that the broad notion of energy constitute a bridge between the two countries as they both are oil and gas producing countries. Mr. Gita Wirjawan focused on the Indonesian government’s role in improving the business environment for foreign investors.

The seminar had thirteen speakers who each addressed their visions and views about future energy partnerships between Norway and Indonesia at the energy field. The speakers were representatives from the government, Indonesian and Norwegian companies, amongst them Dr. Evita Legowo, Director General of the Directorate General Oil & Gas in Indonesia, the President Director of Statoil Norway Mr. Tor Fjæran and the Head of LNG Business in Pertamina, Mr. Hari Karyuliarto, as well as many more.

The purpose of arranging the Seminar was to create a forum for future partnerships and to reveal trends and opportunities within the energy sector. Future opportunities are dependent on measures taken today – and both governmental and private actors are crucial in shaping our prospects. Clean energy activities such as hydropower and carbon capturing & storage were issues covered in the presentations and at a panel discussion at the end of the day. One highly emphasized approach during the entire program was the potential win-win situation – despite the many challenges – in the energy sector in Indonesia, and many Norwegian companies are interested in turning these challenges in to future opportunities.
