Message from the Ambassador

Welcome to the Norwegian webpages for Indonesia and Timor Leste.

Norway and Indonesia enjoy a long-standing and close relationship – an increasingly dynamic partnership in climate, trade and investment, in the United Nations and many other areas. The ties between the two countries and peoples are strong. I want to contribute to strengthen the friendship between Indonesia and Norway. At a time of regional and global changes, the bilateral relations with Indonesia remain of great importance to Norway.

In 1906, a Norwegian honorary Consulate General was established in Batavia, which was the administrative center for the then Dutch East Indies. Norway was represented when Indonesia became an independent republic on 27 December, 1949, and was among the very first nations to recognize Indonesia's new status. Diplomatic relations were established between Norway and Indonesia on 25 January, 1950, through a side-accreditation from Bangkok (and later from Manila). Norway's ambassador in Bangkok, Nikolai Aall, thus became Norway's first ambassador to Indonesia.

On 27 April, 1971, a resident Embassy was formally established in Jakarta. Since then, our countries have enjoyed growing contact and trade, including mutual visits by ministers, politicians and business people. H.E. President Yudhoyono visited Norway in 2006, Prime Minister Stoltenberg came twice to Indonesia in 2007 and President Yudhoyono to Oslo again in May 2010. Many professional and personal connections between the people of the two countries have been established.

I hope you will find our Embassy web site useful. It contains information regarding different aspects of modern Norway, society and government, economy and trade, history and foreign policy as well as culture. You will find links to other Norwegian web sites with access to more in-depth information. The web site also includes information related to visa and travel.

We want to present the unique qualities of Norway and the role of Norway as a partner in many areas such as economic cooperation and trade, multilateral cooperation, as well as our partnership with Indonesia in areas such as human rights, the environment, development efforts, health and our joint work for global peace and development.

We are eager to continuously improve our web page, so please share with us any suggestions you may have.

Selamat datang, to our website

Stig Traavik
