Aceh Civil Society

During the civil war in Aceh (1976-2005), there was little room for civil society to operate. The empowerment project aims to promote human rights and build capacity for democratic participation among the civil society in Aceh.

The project has three focus areas:
- research
- political capacity building
- advocacy

Norway finances this project for 3 years, starting in 2006. The project will receive 280,000 USD in 2008. It is implemented by DEMOS (Indonesian Centre for Democracy and Human Rights Studies).

The vision of DEMOS is to contribute to create a pluralistic society where the values of justice, democracy and human dignity are respected. It seeks to do so by developing and increasing societal participation and capacity. DEMOS was formed in 2002.
