Forest and climate change

Indonesia is an important actor in international fora on enviromental-, development and trade policy. Norway has since 1990 had an ongoing cooperation on the environmental field with Indonesia, due to the major significance Indonesia has regarding environment, biological diversity and global environmental outlook.

Indonesia houses the world third largest rainforest areas after the Amazon and Congo rainforest. The rainforest areas in Indonesia are threatened by climate changes, illegal logging, forest fires and establishment of large scale plantation areas on former forest areas. A high rate of deforestation also results in large greenhouse gas emissions, especially from carbon rich peat lands.

The bilateral cooperation on enviroment includes a political dialogue regarding climate issues and efforts towards illegal forest activities and illegal logging and trade with tropical wood. Indonesia is also an important part of the Norwegian Government`s climate- and forest initiative and serves as one of the nine pilot countries for the United Nations Collaborative Programme on Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation in Developing Countries.
