Democracy Building on the Sand: Advances and Setbacks in Indonesia

08/05/2008 // On Tuesday 6 May, Center for Democracy and Human Rights Studies – DEMOS - presented the results   of the 2nd National Expert Survey on Problems and Options of Indonesian Democracy.

The launching of the Survey to the public coincides with the celebration of a decade of Reformasi and indicates improvement in the situation of democracy in Indonesia the last ten years in  the areas of eradication of corruption, government’s transparency and accountability, the subordination of government officials before the law, the enactments of rule of law and the capacity to combat organized crime.

However the survey also shows that the project of reform in Indonesia through democratization still faces many obstacles:

  • The elites are dominating the politics and representation becomes the most acute problem,
  • The improvements of social and economical rights are not yet significant,
  • Deterioration of various civil freedom, such as freedom of religion and freedom of speech and organization.

The survey has been financed with support both from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Swedish Agency for International Development Cooperation. The survey has been carried out in close cooperation between DEMOS, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta and the University of Oslo.
